We are cordially inviting you to partner with Palmetto Works in our SPRING FLING 2022 fundraiser to be held at 6:00 pm on Saturday, May 21st at Freewoods Farms located at 9515 Freewoods Road, Myrtle Beach (Burgess), SC. This annual event provides support for the Palmetto Youth Leadership Academy and the CHOPS Produce Store, which enables us to impact the lives of many children, youth, and adults in Conway and surrounding communities.
For more than a decade, the Palmetto Youth Leadership Academy sponsors an after school enrichment program and summer camp serving over 640 children and teenagers through activities promoting their success in the public schools and at home. So that the children and teens may embrace new experiences and perspectives, the program provides opportunities for music, dance, reading, sports, field trips, and STEM activities. For the past 5 years, partnering with TeamEffort Youth Missions has exposed our youth to young people from across America.
Palmetto Works’ impact goes beyond Conway and South Carolina. In fact, Palmetto Works regularly mentors Coastal Carolina University students whose interests are in public health and community engagement. We fondly remember working with CCU graduate Natalie Fisher, who found her calling in nutrition education by working with the children of Palmetto Kids through CHOPS Produce. Natalie now works for Americorps in Atlanta, GA in an urban farm setting and has launched her own farm to table cooking and nutrition business called Loco Coco! Further, Palmetto Works has supervised three field education placement students from Duke Divinity School. Rev. Kendal McBroom, Senior Pastor at Turner’s Chapel AME Church in High Point, NC, has modeled his church’s garden project after the efforts of CHOPS Produce to feed and educate his community.
