Palmetto Works:
Where Everybody Learns, Works, and Thrives!

Palmetto Works is a faith-based, “rubber meets the road” non-profit ministry, and is an outreach of the Palmetto Missionary Baptist Church. Meeting the needs of young people in the greater Conway, S.C. area, Palmetto Works believes in age and developmentally appropriate work so that:

  • Kids can play and learn safely;
  • Adolescents can learn about who they are and what careers to consider;
  • Adults can build family, while furthering career goals and community involvement;
  • All who are called may better assist in the work of the church to be the presence of Christ in the world.

Palmetto Kids

Palmetto Kids! Music u0026 Arts Academy is a diverse instructional, educational and fun after school enrichment program and summer camp for children ages 5 – 12. Over the past decade we have served more than 500 children with academic tutoring, and piano, guitar, and African drumming lessons. We spend time reading, with hands-on creative artistic expressions in a variety of arts u0026 crafts, games and STEM activities. Our primary source of volunteers comes from among students at Coastal Carolina University from a wide variety of disciplines.

Youth Leadership Academy

This program through Palmetto Works is specifically designed to keep children, 13 – 18, in school through one-on-one mentoring from qualified volunteers. We ask the older students to serve as Junior Camp Counselors for Palmetto Kids!, which is often their first real “work” experience and responsibility. We focus on STEM-based tutoring, social, spiritual, physical and career-oriented support in carefully designed, proven programs.

Volunteers are the backbone of Palmetto Works

The hard-working students of Coastal Carolina University (CCU) comprise the bulk of our volunteer program. The Woman of Color (WOC) organization at CCU, and sororities, fraternities, interns from the School of Public Health, and Music Departments are especially gracious in providing student volunteers with time and talent. Parents, community members, and others also serve in administration, tutoring and fund-raising roles. While the students of CCU may comprise the lion’s share of our volunteers, anyone with a heart to serve can find a home at Palmetto Works.
